Back-to-School Success: Tips to Prepare Your Child and Support Your Family

Source: Get Parenting Tips

The start of a new school year brings excitement, growth, and sometimes a bit of stress – for both kids and parents. From making sure your child is healthy and ready to walk through the classroom doors, to setting routines that keep mornings running smoothly, a little preparation can make a big difference. In Texas, staying on top of school requirements, helping your child feel confident with the right supplies, and tapping into local support systems are all key steps to ensuring a strong start. Whether your child is heading to school for the very first time or returning after summer break, these practical tips can help set your family up for success.

Preparing for School

Making sure your child is prepared for the first day of school and ensuring they have everything they need is crucial for their future success. Before the first day, make sure that your child is up to date on all their vaccinations. This is a requirement in Texas, as determined by state law and policies. This is also a critical part of preventing the spread of disease and protecting the health of your child, in addition to anyone they may interact with throughout the day. Additionally, making sure your child has school supplies or back to school gear they need can significantly help to reduce any anxiety they may have. If possible, allow your child to pick out a backpack, notebook or clothes in their favorite colors and patterns, encouraging them to express themselves. This can help your child feel confident and excited about going to school!

Setting Routines

No matter the age of your child, setting consistent daily routines can help everyone within the household succeed during the school year. Knowing what to expect can help reduce any stress leading into the first day of school and beyond. Setting routines before the official start of school is a great way to help prepare your child for any adjustments. Think about how much time you and your child will need in the morning and make sure you plan enough time to not feel rushed. How much time does your child need to get dressed or to eat breakfast? Setting a night-time routine is just as important. Once you’ve set a wake up time, then work towards choosing a bedtime that ensures your child gets enough sleep. Make sure your child is well rested and getting around 9 to 12 hours of sleep, which is the recommended time by most doctors.

Seek Local Support

It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed! Seeking local support can be very helpful, especially during stressful times like back to school. Texas has many programs that serve to strengthen families and offer assistance. Depending on where you live you may find programs that offer parenting skills, crisis intervention, or community and school-based mentoring: all of which can be a very valuable resource during back to school.

The Texas Parent Helpline team is always ready to listen in order to help find solutions and direct any parent to the right local resources.
