Fentanyl Awareness: Protecting Our Youth and Community
Fentanyl use among teenagers is rising at an alarming rate, bringing an increased risk of overdose and devastating consequences for families.
Understanding the Dangers of Fentanyl
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine (CDC, 2023). Many teens and young adults unknowingly ingest fentanyl, as it is often found in counterfeit pills disguised as prescription medications. Even a tiny amount can be deadly.
Key Resources for Awareness and Prevention
To help our community stay informed and prepared, we encourage everyone—especially parents, educators, and youth service providers—to take advantage of these critical resources:
- OnePillKillsTX.com – A statewide initiative by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services providing vital information on how to recognize, prevent, and reverse fentanyl poisoning.
- One Pill Kills: Protect Teens From Counterfeit Fentanyl – A collaborative effort from the CDC and Texas Health and Human Services Commission that educates teens and families about the dangers of fentanyl (HHS, 2024).
- Naloxone Texas – A resource offering free access to Narcan (naloxone), a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. The site also provides online training on how to administer naloxone in an emergency.
- Texas Targeted Opioid Response (TTOR) – A program dedicated to preventing opioid-related deaths by increasing access to prevention, treatment, and recovery support services (TTOR, 2024).
